“Mr Y” is finally gone. What happened? – by Sharon Ritchie

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

Mr Y was one of the two Wellington public servants who caused concerns by getting caught faking records and embezzling money. He and some other people would be upset if we posted his name here. But we can tell you three things:

  • Everyone in the Wellington law community knows who “Mr Y” is,

  • He parted ways with his employer in the last two months, and

  • If it weren’t for Mr Y’s interesting behaviour popping up in ERA determinations and Employment Court judgments a few years ago, Leighton Associates wouldn’t exist.

UPDATE, 12 December: A spokesman for the employer advised that Mr Y has retired, and that there was no mediated Record of Settlement (RoS). Many RoS have a clause requiring the employee and anyone who has knowledge of it to deny the existence RoS and instead refer to "redundancy", "resignation for health reasons", etc as a cover story. Notwithstanding this, we accept that Mr Y's employment ended by way of retirement.
